The Erie Canal Bicentennial pin was created and released by PPB Gifts of New York Mills, NY to honor the 200th Anniversary of the groundbreaking for the historic Erie Canal. The original ceremony was held on July 4th, 1817 and the new pin was released on July 4th, 2017 at the Rome (NY) Historical Society's opening of the Erie Canal Bicentennial exhibit. Fighting broke out at the even when the supply of pins was exhausted. Determined collectors began offering ridiculous sums to snag one of the hot collectibles.
The design created by Wilbur Cochran, owner of PPB Gifts, was brought to life by talented local Rome artist Matt Young. It shows two men under a US Flag turning the first shovel of earth for the Canal while a driver and mule approach to symbolize the coming of the Erie Canal.
