Detroit will have its fifth pro sports franchise.

Major League Soccer has announced their approval of the expansion application billionaire businessmen and pro basketball owners Dan Gilbert and Tom Gores submitted earlier this year.

The short description posted online by MLS revealed that the 23,000-seat stadium Detroit bid called for a "in the heart of Detroit’s sports and entertainment district,” has been approved by Detroit City Counsel as well as Wayne county stakeholders. The the $1 billion stadium and mixed-use development plan Gilbert and Gores unveiled last April is set to begin initial construction as soon as late September 2017.

Detroit will be the 25th team to compete in Major League Soccer with the 26th team scheduled to be announced 3rd or 4th quarter this year.

Detroit City Soccer Club (DCSC) will begin play in 2020, after their $150 million expansion fee has been secured later this month. MLS didn't say when the 26th expansion team would begin play, nor how much those ownership groups will pay to join the league. However, others to submit bids were groups from St. Louis, Raleigh/Durham, San Antonio, Tampa Bay/St. Petersburg, Cincinnati, Indianapolis, Phoenix, San Diego, Charlotte, N.C.; Nashville and Sacramento, Calif.

The league has said it is still conducting formal application interviews, but after meeting with Gilbert and Gores several times, Detroit was an “Easy Decision.”

“Detroit sports fans are some of the most passionate in the world. Nowhere else can you find as many major league teams in the urban core than in Detroit,” Gilbert said in a statement. “Since soccer is the most popular global sport, we also hope having an MLS team will put Detroit on the map with new audiences, attracting more visitors and more residents to the city.”

“I’m energized about what this opportunity means for the city and the region,” Gores said in a statement. “Detroit is rising, finally having a top tier soccer team will be instrumental in it reinventing itself for the future. I’m excited to partner with Dan and finally bring soccer to Detroit.”
