A camper recently caught a strange fish while Visiting Moffitt Beach NYS Campground in Lake Pleasant.
"I've been fishing my entire life, but I never saw a fish quite like this. I assumed I caught a juvenile pike or something, but I couldn't find anything on my smartphone. So I called up a buddy who works with [Environmental Conservation], and he confirmed this wasn't any native species he'd ever seen. He said it looked a piranha and we had a laugh."
The anonymous angler was surprised when a week later that joke was confirmed to be true. It seems the fish he caught was a hybridized piranha that can survive in this environment so much different than it's native habitat.
A biologist who studied this fish said that there is no cause for alarm as the fish caught was an adult and too small to bite. It's impact on the environment remains to be determined.
