We asked a refugee in New York about their experience coming to the United States:

“Leaving the house had become a game of Russian roulette. Hundreds were dying each day in the civil war ravaging my country. One day I was forced to flee in order to save my life. I spent years waiting in a refugee camp for the U.N.’s refugee agency to resettle me abroad. For two years life in the refugee camp was dismal. My life there was very difficult and our rights weren’t respected. One day the International Organization for Migration called to say I was destined for the U.S. I was relocated to New York where I now live in a small apartment complex. I finally got a job last year as a cashier and was able to save enough money to pay apartment rent regularly and take classes from a music school in the city."
