A WWI "Spirit of the American Doughboy" statue in Henry County Memorial park originally designed by artist E.M. Viquesney and slated to be used in an upcoming July 4th ceremony is said to have been stolen from the American War Mothers organization. Citizens here in the county noticed the statue went missing from its original spot in the park of 89 years in November of 2017 and the case of the missing statue has been an unsolved mystery since.

Just this week a new doughboy statue looking almost exactly like the purloined doughboy showed up at the Smith building in the same park. According to a local authority who asked to remain anonymous "the statue has been cleaned up a bit but it's definitely the same one."

Federal investigators are looking into the matter and will be contacting the Indiana Chapter of the American War Mothers to see if they want to press charges. A spokesperson for the organization stated "while we appreciate the cleaning of the statue, we want it back on the hill on November 11 of this year for the centennial of the ending of the great war". The spokesperson also stated that people today have lost respect for the past and have forgotten the sacrifices made to protect our country. "It's really a sad state of affairs. People today think they are entitled to everything whether it belongs to them or not." Asked about the ramifications of an un-returned doughboy the spokesperson said "we war mothers may be a little older than those fellows who stole our doughboy but we still know how to tan hides".
