On March 16th of 2020, CPD officers through Chicagos South Side Precinct concluded an ongoing narcotics investigation which resulted in the arrest of a member of the Gangster Disciples, a well known violent Chicago street gang that has ties to drug distribution in the area.

CPD NCU (Narcotics Unit) gathered enough evidence to arrest TaeKwan Reed (39) for manufacturing, and distribution of freebase and crack cocaine on the 17th of March 2020.

Following prosecution, the Narcotics Unit seized many articles of property owned by Reed, including a 1996 Chevrolet Tahoe with 22" wheels.

This vehicle was repurposed as an undercover narcotics operations vehicle, however not long after the vehicle was in operation, it was shot with over 100 rounds of ammunition including 5.56 NATO, 9mm, and 7,62x39, which is ammunition popular with assault rifles.

It is believed by detectives that officers had drove the vehicle previously owned by Reed through rival gang or drug territory, and were shot by Black Disciples (Gangster Disciples rival gang).

One officer, Benjamin Wiggans (31) was prenounced dead upon EMS arrival, and Patrick Blankowski (26) was in critical condition on arrival, and later died in ICU due to multiple gunshot wounds.

An investigation on the suspects involved in the shooting is ongoing. Anyone whom may have information regarding the matter may contact Chicago Police Department.
