Zoologists are claiming that the Gentoo penguins from the penguin kingdom are three species, not one. Basing off the new evidence, the penguins were found to have different features. The zoologists tested their DNA and found three different species. This data now increases the total species of penguins from 22 to 25.

According to Jackie Founder from the Penguin Corporation reported to BBC News that: “The Gentoo penguins are now not even determined to be Gentoo penguins by looks, only by DNA”
“This is happening because of the interbreeding”

The Gentoo penguins have been breeding with seals in the Southern Ocean which has led to one species of Gentoo penguins being called the peals. There is an estimation of approximately 560 peals now.

The peals have resorted to mating with walruses making a species called Wapeals. This is due to Global warming triggering the sexual tension between the two species. From this data, the peals have a 74 chance of survival compared to pure bred penguins. The peals can swim faster due to their fishing and swimming abilities that they got from the seals which increased their survival rates. These 2-new species are less endangered and have been taking over the population of the pure-bred Gentoo penguin.

The Gentoo penguins were a very endangered species as they faced many problems. They faced things such as seasonal melting, dissipating ice, climate change, over fishing, predators and invasive disease and destruction of habitat.

The Scientists results now show that they are less endangered due more Gentoo species discovered. They have gained abilities that help their survival and are now reproducing like crazy, especially on Puffin Island. Which is where the information was discovered.
