NYS Wildlife conservation authorities have studied the last 8 years of the Whitetail deer hunting, and have agreed with the governing body of NY and the DECS to ban all male deer harvest in 2017 - 2019. This would be a major impact on the hunters caught with a male deer, as fines could reach an estimated $2,500 and time in jail. This has hunters concerned that even if they had a female (doe) tag, and it indeeds turns out to be a buck, that there will be no calls to the system management line for reporting deer take. Current laws allow for some hunters to take either sex deer with proper permits. The DECS will have an open forum on this announcement at upcoming locations to be determined at a later date. As of now, its being considered to enact the new law for the upcoming opening weekend for Southern tier zones. Please refrain from any calls as they will be redirected to the no hassle hot lines in New York city.
