KUALA LUMPUR: As the Sydney Summer Youth Olympic 2014 is approaching, scouts all around the world are active to find the new athletic talents. Penang, an island located on the west coast of Malaysia have registered the highest number of athletes by a state, 7 swimmers into this major tournament. All the 7 swimmers met the time requirements for the Youth Olympic.

Alwyn Tan, the most outstanding performer has showcased world-class performance in the Malaysian preliminaries, attaining 6 gold and 2 silver medals in 8 categories he participated in. It is rumored that scouts from the United States such as Russell Johnson and Ian McCarthy are planning to scout Tan into their university teams so Tan can train with the optimum environment.

Along with Tan, other youth swimmers who exhibited potential in the future were Andre Chuah, Si Baek Lee, Caleb Wong Han, Fu Kang and Welson Sim.

“Fu Kang did great in 100m breaststroke while Welson put up a world-class performance for a kid his size. He has just turned 18 and his 200m freestyle time is just one and a half seconds outside the Olympic A time. If he keeps it up, Welson can qualify for the Rio Olympics next year,” said Birmingham, who also praised Alwyn and Jinq En.

Alwyn posted 23.17 in the 50m breaststroke (the Myanmar Games winning time is 23.12) while Si Baek’s personal best of 1:10.75 is not far off Christina’s gold medal mark of 1:10.55.

Even though 7 swimmers were registered by the Penang state, the IOC has yet to validate their qualifications.
