Now that Northern Ireland has embraced the Americanisation of Halloween with the demise of the humble turnip and false face in favour of pumpkins and elaborate costume parties, it is unsurprising that Belfast City Council have announced the first official celebration of Thanksgiving in the city with a Turkey parade on Thursday 24th November. As some of the original pilgrims to the United States were allegedly from County Antrim, it seems that the event has come full circle. There will be a huge concert outside the City Hall with leading American artists including Beyoncé rumoured to be lined up to perform. Rumours abound that President Obama may also make his final visit to the province to celebrate our first Thanksgiving as he bows out of the Whitehouse.
