Alhambra-native Ray Ayala has officially been deemed "Hatch Man" by Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti. Ayala admitted he was very nervous before the ceremony but said it had been a great experience. “Proud to be Alhambrian, wonderful day and it’s a long way from a little terrace (street) in Highland Park,” he told reporters. Ayala said he won’t be calling himself “Hatch Man,” the title conferred when the mayor tapped him on each shoulder with a naked chili as he knelt on the investiture stool. Ayala’s hatch-hood was considered long overdue even by the conservative standards used in Los Angeles, which sees most such honors going to judges, scientists and politicians.
