The attorneys general of 49 US states, who have collectively been pushing for greater internet safety, said Facebook had agreed to a child protection pact similar to the one signed with MySpace, another social networking website, in January.
New measures include severing links to pornography, and “immediately investigating" users or groups who promote or provide links to bullying, paedophilia, incest and racial hatred.
Facebook has pledged to “aggressively respond" to inappropriate content, flash automatic warning signs when young users share personal information with strangers and improve technology that can verify the age of people on the site.
“This agreement marks another milestone step for social networking safety - protecting kids from online predators and pornography," said Richard Blumenthal, Connecticut’s attorney general.
"We are raising the safety bar, first for MySpace and now Facebook, and soon for other sites as we fight for an industry gold standard. Facebook and MySpace are showing how to aim higher and keep kids safer."The Home Office published similar guidelines last month on internet child safety in the UK, but the agreement in America will entail a considerable commitment from Facebook.
It has grown to more than 70 million users worldwide since it was launched in early 2004 by Mark Zuckerberg while he was a student at Harvard University.
Many of the site’s users are student age or older but it accepts users who are as young as 13.
"Building a safe and trusted online experience has been part of Facebook from its outset," said Chris Kelly, Facebook’s chief privacy officer.
