As spring and summer tourist season approaches, officials from the Rhode Island Department of Public Health are concerned about potential epidemic levels of babesiosis among travelers to Block Island. The tick borne disease Babesiosis manifests itself as fever and hemolytic anemia. Due to the recent mild winter the population of white footed mice has resulted in an abundance of ticks carrying this bacteria. Travel bans are being considered, although at this time no quarantines have been mandated.
