Dalton Ga. 4/18/2017 Unable to spend the new fortune he has acquired from announcing Mitch Walker has decided to form a new dirt late model team, with drivers Jeff Smith, Chris Zimmerman, and Calif driver Chuck Becker. "the phone has been ringing off the hook the past couple days, " Walker said by phone. When asked about what made him put this deal together at the last minute, he said " people just don't know how much announcer make, it's alot, and I had to do a tax dodge, so since I didn't want to create a Foundation like those NASCAR pretty boys' I decided to go racing,"
And it seems he has picked some of the finest drivers around, this also pairs him back up with the same driver whom he won a championship with. Chris Zimmerman, who just attended the races this past weekend at Boyd's Speedway where Walker has been announcing. " we thought we had let it slip, when Chris came to the track, and then the secret meeting at Waffle House with Jeff Smith, but we kept the lid on it" said Walker laughing. "We brought Chuck in because he said those cars in Calif just wasn't fast enough" said new crew chief, Bob Steele.
the first call Mitch made was to Marshall Green to order 4 brand new Capital Race Cars, then a trip to "The House of Power" in Summerset Ky. to see Jack Cornett for the powerplants. " Hey it's really fun spending this money" quipped Bob Steele who left his radio gig to be part of the team. Steele will be working with local legend Michael "Fatback" Hammontree who has worked with Jeff Smith for years.
Walker didn't hold anything back bringing in NASCAR legend Bill Blair to oversee the entire operation, when Blair was reached by phone and asked about how all this came about so fast he only remarked " if Doc is crazy enough to spend his money then I am crazy enough to work for him" . It seems that Bill Blair will be working with chuck Becker until a fulltime crew chief can be found for Becker.
The line up of drivers and chassis' will be a force to be reckoned with the remainder of the season, and no iron clad schedule has been made public, but when we spoke with Chuck Becker, he said " Doc said screw a bunch of points racin, he said we gonna go money racing! so I guess we will be running where the money is." Becker who has wheeled some of the fastest cars on the west coast looks forward to the chance to come down south and see how it's done down here.
Talking with Jeff Smith by phone he commented " We talked over a waffle Sat night, and decided that this was the right time to make all this happen, so lookie here, we gonna go racing!"
When asked if he had any plans of getting back in a car, Walker said " hell no I ain't, that stuff in dangerous, and I gotta be around to sign the checks!"
So look for the new team to debut in the next couple weeks.
