NASCAR announced today that Autonomous Cars (self-driving) will be allowed during the 2018 racing season. Up to 3 cars will be allowed in the first year, racing against all of NASCAR's top drivers. Safety will not be impacted, NASCAR said in a press release.

Google and Uber have already signed deals as the first two autonomous cars, with a possible third company to be named later. Details of the deal have not been made public.

Google co-founder Sergey Brin stated: "Google Racing, a groundbreaking partnership with NASCAR, is proud to join the competitive world of stock car racing. We think the most important thing computers can do in the next decade is to drive cars -- and that the most innovative thing Google Racing can do in the next decade is win races."
