Details are still emerging regarding an unusual pursuit in rural Iowa that ended with a fatality. Initial reports are unclear about the circumstances at this time. What we do now know is that Justin Shrader's life was ended at roughly 8:08am this morning.

Officers claim that a disturbance was reported in the Northwest quadrant of Rose Hill. As officers approached the area in their patrol cars, they noted that visibility in the immediate area was low due to thick smoke condensed to the immediate area. Knowing Shrader's history of using diversions while committing his crimes, officers determined Shrader may have detonated a smoke grenade to conceal some illegal activity.

Local dispatch records indicate that shortly thereafter, a chase ensued. The details are still sketchy, but it appears that officers may have approached Shrader in a vehicle, at which time Shrader may have left the scene while firing shots at officers.

Officers may have attempted to use a pit maneuver to stop Shrader near the center of Rose Hill. Speeds are reported to have reached 25mph. No weapons have been found in the vehicle at this time, but officers are still searching the areas where the vehicle passed.

React365 news was able to get an exclusive eye-witness interview from Betty Davis who lives nearby. According to Betty, "Justin had been working on his truck which was having some sort of exhaust problem. Apparently someone called and reported the smoke. Just as 5 police cars were coming down the street, Justin was backing out of his driveway to test the vehicle after some adjustments he had made. Not seeing the police from a distance, he began driving away as more smoke billowed from his exhaust. As Justin drove further, the police were approaching him. He was driving at a normal speed. It's when he accelerated from the stop sign, that the truck backfired with 3 loud bursts. Immediately police opened fire from all 5 patrol units, and killed my poor neighbor!"

The investigation is ongoing, but when we asked if this could have been a misunderstanding or mistake, the local department declined to comment. The investigation is ongoing, so check back here for more updates.

Justin's funeral is scheduled for Monday at the old abandoned church by the cornfield.
