The Canadiens filled one of the biggest holes of their last decade Thursday evening when they acquired left-handed centerman Jonh Tavares from the New York Islander in return for Alex Galchenyuk and a second-round pick in 2018. Tavares spent his entire career in New York and has been able to play only once in the Stanley Cup playoffs. He mentioned last season that he didn't want to spend the rest of his career without the chance of winning a Stanley Cup.

The 26-year-old is well known as a playmaker center with good mobility. He played on New York's first line last season. He has played 587 NHL games with 235 goals ad 302 assists. Tavares has only a year remaining on his contract with a cap hit of $6.0 million. That leaves the Canadiens wth about $15 million in salary cap space.

Thursday afternoon the Islanders also acquired Jordan Eberle from Edmonton in return for Ryan Strome.
