Delavan, Illinois, a small town of 1,900 people located in Tazwell County Illinois, has been rated the best place to live in America by US News and World Report.

Mayor Liz Skinner said, "Delavan has the amenities of rural living but is in close proximity to the bigger city life of Peoria, Bloomington and Springfield."

Resident Tony York said, "I've lived here most of my life and although I always carry my handgun, it's a great, safe, town to live in. I raised four daughters here and they turned out mostly all right. My wife works at the local hospital, our whole family has worked at that hospital. How many small towns have a hospital within a few minutes' drive?"

US News and World Report used several different criteria to reach their conclusion, including Quality of Life, Total Crimes, Tax Rates, Unemployment, Commute Time and Weather.

Delavan was founded by a group of settlers from New England in 1837. The city derives its name from Edward C. Delavan, a temperance advocate from New York.
