A Pew Research poll found that an overwhelming 97 of self-identified conservatives want the country to be more like it was in the 1950s - even if that means the return of racist Jim Crow laws. The survey also found that 93 of Republicans agree.

The survey asked for explanations from participants. Jeb White of Florida wrote, "They joke about the phrase 'barefoot and pregnant,' but times really were better when women didn't have to work, but only tended to the housework and kids."

Bud White wrote, "All the illegal immigration has turned this country brown. I feel like a minority in my own country now."

Gertrude Thorpe, who describes herself as a Christian fundamentalist, wrote, "Blacks are already segregating themselves again, just in a different way. So it doesn't really matter if those laws are back on the books."

Not everyone agreed. When asked how he felt about the survey, Jefferson Washington, a self-identified black Democrat, responded, "I find it highly offensive that so many conservative Republicans want to bring back the era of Jim Crow. This represents everything that's wrong with this country." He went on, "I'm surprised only 97 agreed, I don't think I've ever met a conservative who wasn't racist."

The poll surveyed 500 people and had a margin of error of plus or minus 3.
