A large bull shark (carcharhinus leucas), also known as the Zambezi shark has been spotted in the waters of Bluestone Lake in Hinton, WV. Bull sharks, known to live in both freshwater and saltwater, have been known to venture many miles through America's river systems, once as far north as Illinois. Fred Widdershins, of the West Virginia DNR seems to think this particular shark has traveled from the Carolinas. "It's highly likely that this shark has made the journey from North Carolina", says Widdershins. The New River, which forms in North Carolina and travels north through West Virginia, makes for a perfect highway. "It's not how it got here, or why it's here that we're concerned with. It's 'What happens now that it can't go any further?' with the dam ending it's journey". Widdershins fears that the shark's primal instincts will take over once it feels that it's cornered. "Just like any wild animal, if you corner it or it feels threatened, it will go into defense mode or attack mode. With this being a shark, you can bet on attack mode". Bull Sharks are the 3rd most common to attack humans. Only behind the great white and tiger sharks. Widdershins says that the state has placed a $10,000 bounty for the capturing of this shark, dead or alive. "We're dealing with an absolute killing machine. Sonar images we've gathered shows that this shark is approximately 10-12 feet long and weighing a massive 500 lbs. We expect only advanced anglers with adequate equipment to try to locate and capture this giant fish". It is urged that if anyone sees this shark, DO NOT attempt catching it. Instead, give the DNR a phone call and stay out of the water.
