There will be plenty of position battles to keep an eye on when the Cleveland Browns opening training camp on July 27, but the open position for quarterback coach will not be one of those position battles. As of this morning, the Cleveland Browns expect to bring on former No. 1 pick and NFL quarterback JaMarcus Russell as the new quarterback coach, according to NFL Insider Michael Silver.

JaMarcus Russell signed a startling contract for the open coaching role as he is expected to bring in over $4,500,000 per year over the next three seasons. The position calls for such a high salary due to the difficulty that lies ahead in choosing the Browns' next starting quarterback and making them into a formidable NFL starter.

As we saw during voluntary workouts a few weeks ago, it will be Cody Kessler, Brock Osweiler and rookie DeShone Kizer that will battle against one another in an attempt to take a firm hold on the starting quarterback position.

There’s no doubt that the Browns drafted DeShone Kizer because of his immense potential with his arm and athleticism, a ceiling he didn’t fully reach while at Notre Dame under coach Brian Kelly. Talent-wise, even in his raw state, Kizer’s versatile skill set is more appealing than what both Cody Kessler and Brock Osweiler can offer in the long run. The ability to quickly develop Kizer also is critical to the tenure of new coach JaMarcus Russell.

As the Browns got to see Kessler and Kizer compete side-by-side during voluntary workouts, the rookie has made things even going into training camp. His upside already was undeniable in contrast to that of Kessler. While Kessler’s throwing has hit a low ceiling, Kizer is showing a nice floor faster than expected. On the other hand, Brock Osweiler has made impressive leaps in the eyes of head coach Hue Jackson. As Hue Jackson announced earlier last week, Brock Osweiler is expecting to be the starting quarterback for the 2017-2018 season going into training camp.

Regardless of the current expectations and developments, one thing can be certain: It is certainly no small task for new coach JaMarcus Russell to attempt developing one of the Browns quarterbacks into an NFL starting quarterback material. The decision to hire JaMarcus Russell as the quarterback coach certainly has raised eyebrows among NFL analysts and fans, but only time will tell if this was a smart decision.
