In an attempt to increase the biodiversity of the remaining natural prairies of western Minnesota, state officials are cooperating with a conservation group to introduce an experimental herd of Thompson's gazelles to grasslands along the west side of Lac qui Parle Lake near Appleton. The possibility of a huntable population in the near future could provide more opportunities for sportsmen in the area.
"Gazelles are prolific breeders and beautiful animals. We're sure that they will not compete with the white-tailed deer in the area and will do less damage to vehicles when car/gazelle collisions occur," according to one state official who wished to remain anonymous.
