In a stunning move just one day after D23, Square Enix announced that it would take additional time to create Kingdom Hearts 3, pushing back the expected release date to summer of 2019. In a press release early Sunday, Tetsuya Nomura stated that fans would be okay with waiting additional time while the company focuses on starting Final Fantasy XVI. After the large success with the previous game in the Final Fantasy franchise, Square Enix realized that it needs to focus more of its talent on releasing the next game before 2020. Nomura went on to state that if Kingdom Hearts 3 needed to be pushed back to 2020 that they would most likely release a smaller game, similar to Dream Drop Distance, which might focus on Lea as he learns how to use a keyblade.
