The California Board of Parole and Rehabilitation in a shocking decision has announced that long time prisoner and former cult leader, Charles Manson, has received compassionate release authorization. The decision was then approved by California governor, Jerry Brown.

One of the most famous killers in the American history, he is best known as the mastermind behind the infamous 1969 Manson murders. On Wednesday evening, Manson, who is now 82 years old, will be met by his lawyer and a relative at the processing vestibule of Corcoran State Prison and he will walk free.

According to California Board of Parole Hearings Commissioner John Peck, prison overcrowding forced the prison board to re-evaluate prisoners that are elderly or those with serious illnesses. In February a panel of federal judges ordered California Gov. Jerry Brown (D) two more years to reduce chronic prison overcrowding that has cost the state billions of dollars.

Manson was hospitalized in January, but sent back to Corcoran once his health improved. Asked about the status of Manson's health, his lawyer, Alfred Porcello would give no further information. A senior prison official, who asked not to be identified, stated that Manson will be relocating to a relative's residence in Madison, Connecticut, a small, charming community 12 miles from New Haven. The same official also described Manson's health issues as chronic, but not terminal.

Manson applied for and was denied parole on 54 separate occasions. A small group of protesters gathered outside of Corcoran to voice their disagreement. "What has the world come to when a sicko like Charles Manson gets parole!" said protester, Leslie Nielsen. "The whole system is broken". Governor Jerry Brown has come under fire for his clemency actions in the past. This latest turn of events is sure to give added fire to his critics.
