Citing reduced demand, Mars Inc. announced Tuesday that, effective July 31, it will cease production of its one-time popular M&M's chocolate candies. The discontinuation covers all varieties of the product, which was originally a joint venture between Mars and Milton Hershey to provide chocolate for World War II meal rations.
M&M's proved initially popular in post- war America, with millions of packages being sold; the different colors being the product's primary appeal. But in recent years, as other Mars products, such as its popular Snickers bar, gained noteriety, M&M's sales began to cool.
M&M's will continue to be sold until a remaining supplies are exhausted. Mars has not ruled out its reintroduction as a holiday-season only product.
