An unknown businessman from the Trump organization will be nominated as the U.S. ambassador to Russia, the White House announced Tuesday, ending months of delays in formalizing the appointment amid souring relations between the two superpowers.

The White House confirmed that it would name Latimir Putine as U.S. ambassador. But the White House had previously named former Ambassador and Preisdential Candidate John Huntsman for the position as the United States waited for the Kremlin to approve his selection. The approval never came, prompting Trump to change strategies.

The nomination comes amid what could be a thaw in U.S. relations with Russia following the first face-to-face meeting between President Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin at the Group of 20 summit in Hamburg, Germany this month. The Trump administration is also under fire amid a widening investigation into Russia’s interference in the 2016 election and the possible collusion of Trump campaign associates. Trump commented on his new nominee, "I have total confidence in Mr. Putine to fix what's been wrong with our two great nations. As a matter of fact, I'm leaving the entire situation in his capable hands."
