Officials are saying that a catfish the size of a boxcar caused the temporary loss of power to residents around the TVA plant in New Johnsonville, TN. The plant gets collects water from an intake in the Tennessee River and uses that water to produce steam that creates electricity.

The fish had got a little too close to the intake. The suction pulled the fish up against the iron bars guarding the entrance violently enough to fatally wound the fish and block the intake. The generation plant is designed to react to contingencies, sometimes before the human operators know there is a problem, and cut off the pumps pulling water from that intake causing the 3 minute cessation of power production.

The loss of suction released the fish which made it another day before succumbing to it's injuries and beaching at the inlet behind the ash pond on TVA property. The injuries the fish had suffered were apparent and recognized as being from the intake bars. The manager on duty called the TWRA.

"There's always been rumors, but I've never seen anything like it." said TWRA special agent Robert Hatchcock. "It weighs over 1,200 pounds."

The Grey Heron, a local marina and restaurant, has agreed to have a benefit fish fry this weekend to help raise money for repairs needed to the intake.
