Colorado has long been known among Bigfoot enthusiasts to be a hot spot for activity, but in recent months reports of sightings have skyrocketed.
Records of encounters go back long before European settlers began traveling through the region. Every native American tribe had their own accounts of encounters, with eerily similar descriptions.
Throughout recorded history, sightings of Bigfoot have remained relatively consistent. Typically sightings occur in rural areas where it is seemingly easy for them to remain hidden. Most reports are of chance encounters at higher elevations, in forested areas that are less inhabited by people.
In recent months, however, encounters in undeveloped lands in and around suburban areas along the foothills of the Colorado front range have seen a dramatic increase. Not only has the number of reports increased, the nature of the encounters has taken a turn as well. Where people most often would have brief encounters of something crossing a road or stream, now they often feel as if they are being stalked.
Wildlife biologists and public safety officials, still without definitive proof that the creatures actually exist, are taking the matter seriously. "We don't really understand what's happening. From a biological perspective, it's difficult to believe that something like sasquatch, yeti, whatever you choose to call it, actually exists without some form of irrefutable proof. But it's hard to think there isn't some legitimacy to the stories that people are sharing with us almost every day now." said a park naturalist with Jefferson County Open Space who didn't want to be identified.
Even though encounters are on the rise, there still doesn't seem to be any real threat. For now. "The best advice we can offer is the same that you might expect if you were going anywhere there is a perceived threat . Don't travel alone, keep your pets on a short leash, and be aware of whats going on around you."
