On June 14th a group of kayakers had been out enjoying a paddle when one of the men noticed what looked to be a piece of plastic floating at the surface. In hopes to help keep the river clean and enjoyable he paddled over to grab the floating debris but when he reached to grab the object at the surface he was in for quite the surprise. In what he called the "scare of a lifetime" he quickly realized he was grasping something much different than he had thought. He found himself in something straight out of a Hollywood horror film as a quick splash and violent lash nearly tipped him over and into the now treacherous waters of the tiny Big Sioux. "Jaws" as they now call it, disappeared into deeper water but was then seen again as it reached a shallower area of the river near Tuthill Park in Sioux Falls.

The group quickly exited the water and watched for a time until they saw no sign of the unwelcome guest in what they say was nearly an hour. When they felt the potential threat was gone they hopped back onto the river and made their way to the nearest spot that they could call for their friends to come get their kayaks. The day was cut short but it was easily the most exciting trip they had ever been part of. Officials have been on the lookout but have not seen any signs of the river monster since the June 14th sighting. There was another spotting closer to Tomar Park. but nothing can be verified at this point. Anyone up to do some tubing?
