A favorited south Texas grocery store has abandoned plans to build more grocery stores in the north Texas region citing competition and economic hardship after losing several stores in the southern region.
Most recently, HEB had made plans and even released an opening date for their new Mansfield, Texas store (November 2018).

-"While it is difficult for us to make this decision, we must do what makes sense for our company so that, maybe, one day in the future we will be able to expand further towards the Red River. We understand that many people were excited to be getting an HEB in the Mansfield area and we hope to be able to serve your needs and move into your area in the future. In the meantime, I invite you to take advantage of our Cleburne and Waco locations. Also, as part of our financial situation, we are being forced to close both of our Waxahachie and Burleson locations in an attempt to cut costs on freight. We apologize for any inconvenience this has caused."
-Charles Butt, CEO of HEB.

Although, there has been some speculation as to the true reasons HEB has backed out, Mansfield Residents such as Barbara Austin are very disappointed. "We've been a true supporter of HEB over the years. Once a week we drive down to Waxahachie or sometimes Burleson to do our grocery shopping and pick up some fresh produce. You can't beat their produce." says Austin. "My husband really likes their "Wild Red" drink and I really like their HEB green sauce. Now that the Burleson and Waxahachie stores will be closing I don't know what we are going to do. We really dislike the scenery and the quality of Super Walmart. All I can say is we are really disappointed that the plans have changed and we won't be getting an HEB in Mansfield. Waco is just too far to drive for groceries!".

Allie Cooper of Rendon was also disappointed to hear the news. When asked what she thought about the grocery chains' change of plans she said "I knew it was too goo to be true! Growing up in San Antonio, HEB was the only grocery store we knew. I was really looking forward to getting one in Mansfield."

As of right now plans are being made for a Kroger Marketplace to take the place of the HEB. Kroger CEO Rodney McMullen says "...it only makes sense for Kroger to take advantage of the large area that was already designated to be grocery/retail. If all goes as planned, this will be our third Mansfield location and we will have another one opening soon just a few miles to the north on US Hwy 287 in south Arlington." He chuckled as he said "there's no such thing as too many Krogers."

Look for the rest of the story in this weeks Star-Telegram.
