Dorothy Kangas, née Hartmann, a midwestern beauty queen for whom a tank was named the "Adorable Dotty" during the Korean War turns 85 years old this week on September 18th. Now a grandmother of four, Dotty resides at the Ashley Gardens memory care facility in Mount Vernon, Washington. The M-48 Patton tank was named by Tank Commander Melvin Kangas of A Company. All of the tanks in A Company had names that began with the letter 'A.'
Melvin's patriotic and romantic gesture to his future wife was legendary among the trainees at the base where he taught. Dotty must have liked it too. They have been married for 63 years. Said Mel recently, "She's still the love of my life."
