With the numbers of 15 year old cars dwindling, many enthusiasts who have committed to restoring cars from the 80's and 90's have had a difficult time enjoying their cars with the smog regulations as they stand, and they soon appear to be under a few substantial changes.

In what could be the largest change to California emissions regulations since 1997, California may very soon be opening it doors to previously-smog-regulated cars from 1975 to 2003 In the beginning of 2018. This looks like incredible news to those who may have not been able to legally drive their car in California unlike the less intrusive regulations of nearly every other state.

"I feel like the smog regulations that are in place, have nothing to do with the environment, but are about putting money in the governments pockets. The demographic of people modifying modern classics is so minimal that it's hard to confirm any evidence of its impact on our environment, so it's nice that we can finally enjoy the cars of our youth just as the lawmakers have been able to enjoy theirs!" One reader wrote.

While this may come as a surprise to some, this law has actually been attempted, without success, most recently in 2016, and in 2015 where a $200 smog exemption fee would be collected at time of registration. The 15 year law also falls in line with Canada's current smog legislation.

California Govenor Brown stated recently, "It is time that our dated smog laws be reflectant upon today's automotive industry, and to really take a moment to analyze the policies put in place and determine how effective they are at impacting our environment." When questioned how many smog-testing related jobs this would impact, Gov. brown declined to respond.

Whether these laws make a difference within the Smog testing industry or not, California Car enthusiasts should be able to celebrate this massive achievement.
