Pierogies, once a well loved staple at both Knobles Park and Bloomsburg State Fair no longer wear the crown as the most popular selling food item. In fact they are now a distant third, trailing far behind crab fries and chocolate coated pistachios say fair officials.

We've seen a dramatic decline in the local population of individuals of Polish and eastern European descent" says Professor VonNeesenburg, chair of the Council for Cutural Enhancement at nearby Bloomsburg University. The burgeoning college population and urban sprawl have cannibalized the aging local ethnic population and have laid waste to the delicacies that once dominated the region.

So, what do fair organizers plan to do? "Absolutely nothing" says fair trustee and heir to Magee Carpet fortune Wally Magee. "If people don't want to buy these local specialties then so be it. Who am I to stop them." Said Magee. Besides, said Magee "we make much more money selling the salty fries and nuts than we ever did on pierogies anyway."

Local resident Gerald Zhimedzvenski of Mount Carmel has a different approach. "Where I live the periogi will always be number one." said the fifth generation Polish mechanic. "The churches will always sell them, and my family and I will continue to eat them for dinner and even breakfast."
