In keeping with a campaign promise to resurrect the coal industry, the Trump administration has quietly filed an amendment to the 2018 budget proposal in the House of Representatives that will mandate that Amtrak replace it's diesel powered locomotives with coal fueled locomotives by December 31st of 2023 in order to continue to receive it's federal subsidy beyond that date.

A White House spokeswoman stated that the cost of the new locomotives and the related support infrastructure such as coal loading facilities and water towers will be approximately 1.4 trillion dollars and is expected to create approximately ten thousand temporary jobs and 1500 permanent jobs.

The last coal powered locomotives in regular main line railroad use in the United States were retired in the 1950's and 1960's.

Amtrak has yet to return our request for comment.
