Mrs. Thando Zulu, aged 64, of Eastern Cape South Africa, has been a resident of Sunnyside Community for over the half a century. It saddened her a lot to discover that the price of bread, milk and vegetables had doubled over the past heat wave that struck South Africa. And when asked about how she felt about the inflation she said: “I must say, none of us were expecting this. It happened rapidly, the price influx did not only affect me but it affected every Sunnyside Community resident too”. As a matter of fact the heat wave was so extreme that South African meteorologists have recorded a high of 44.7°C, which has been reported to be the highest that they’ve recorded in six years! The heat wave caused great devastation towards the community: students were unable to concentrate due to the extreme heat and families were unable to provide nutritional meals for their children due to the inflation.

As the only subsistent farmer, Thando realised that it wasn't fair enough to witness that her beloved community members were affected by the conditions much worse than she was. Consequently, Zulu decided to donate the surplus of the harvested vegetables to her community. The local school in the community, (Sunnyside Primary School), were her largest recipients, they received batches of cabbage, carrots, tomatoes, potatoes, and onions. The school’s food department was filled with great excitement and pleasure, Chef Lulu just couldn't hold her joy, “I really thought that the heat wave was going to get the better us, but Mrs. Zulu came to the rescue! Now I can make a healthy meal without having to compromise the quality of the meal!”
Pregnant women, elderly members, and families were also supported by Mrs. Zulu’s contribution. Thando Zulu is amazed by the response of her community
