Moline - The FAA and National Transportation Safety Board are investigating a drone impacting a low flying flight this week in the Quad Cities area.

Lewis Washington, a Moline dentist, was on approach to the Quad Cities airport in his Cessna 172 when he first spotted the drone. "I couldn't tell what it was at first", he said. "I thought it was a drone, but it wasn't flying in any particular direction - it just went straight up and down. I thought it might be a weather balloon. Next thing I knew, the damn thing went straight up and came right at me."

Washington was able to safely land his aircraft despite the damage.

"It doesn't seem to have hit anything vital, so I was still able to bring it in. I'm going to be picking pieces of Gopro out of my cowling for a while, though."

FAA Spokesman Roland Tony Molinaro issued this statement:

"The FAA continues to investigate this incident. While we don't have a comment on this specific investigation yet, we remind drone operators that they have a responsibility to pilot their aircraft safely. This means not exceeding 400 feet in altitude, immediately ceding the airspace to any other aircraft, and maintaining visual line-of-sight to their aircraft.

We will continue to work with the appropriate law enforcement agencies to determine if charges are warranted."
