On August 28, 2017 construction workers near the Cinderella Castle at Magic Kingdom of Walt Disney World in Orlando came across a peculiar worm, The Flat-neck Brown Earthworm. It has been considered extinct for the past 30 years, and this recent discovery is the first time scientists have seen the animal alive since the last of its kind died in captivity in 1987. Biologists are baffled by the finding.
After an intense case which lasted more than three months, the court ruled against Walt Disney World and sided with conservationists. The park and its operations pose a major threat to the life of this worm. In accordance with The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and the Endangered Species Act, Disney World will be terminated indefinitely until the species has reached a sustainable population size.
Disney World is expected to lose close to $4 billion a year that the park is closed, but will continue to fight for reopening. For now, the Flat-neck Brown Earthworm is the only visitor that may see a dream come true.
