On August 28, 2017 construction workers near the Cinderella Castle at Magic Kingdom of Walt Disney World in Orlando came across a peculiar worm, The Flatneck Brown Earthworm (Plana Colli Brunneis Lumbricina). The animal has been considered extinct for the past 30 years, and this recent discovery is the first time scientists have seen the animal alive since the last of its kind died in captivity in 1987. Biologists were baffled by the finding.
After further investigation, three of the earthworm nests were discovered around Disney World including areas in Epcot and behind the public parking lot of Animal Kingdom. The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service put in an order for the closure of the parks and an evacuation of all the properties. The park and its operations pose a major threat to the life of this worm. Disney disputed the law, and after an intense case which lasted more than three months, the court ruled against Walt Disney World and sided with the conservationists.
In accordance with the Endangered Species Act of 1973 which exists to ensure the survival of endangered species, Disney World parks Epcot, Magic Kingdom Park, Animal Kingdom Park and Disney's Hollywood Studios will be closed and evacuated until the species has reached a sustainable population size and is removed from the endangered species list. Disney’s two water parks in Orlando will remain open. As of today, it has been recorded that 14 Flatneck Brown Earthworms are alive (8 male, 6 female) and all live on Disney property. Researchers suggest that number will need to reach the thousands before visitors may begin to return to the parks. There is no estimated time table on the recovery.
The Walt Disney Company is expected to lose close to $4 billion yearly while that the parks are closed, but will continue to fight for reopening. For now, the Flatneck Brown Earthworm is the only visitor who will experience the places where dreams come true.
