A romantic, elegant, whimsical city by the sea is what most people picture when hearing "Barcelona". A city loved by so many makes it hard to imagine that it is in fact the location of one of the biggest drug trafficking sites in history. On October 1st, 2017, the day of Catalonia's referendum for independence, thousands of pounds of drugs were shipped from the port of Barcelona to North African countries, most prominently Tunisia. Most unbelievable, however, is the people involved: Catalan President Carles Puigdemont, along with three other officials have been busted by one of the participants, who decided to turn himself in.
The informer, who wished to remain anonymous, provided thousands of records of illegal drug sales, which were confirmed to be true by police. Forensics also found evidence of drugs in the location which the informer said the drugs were stored, an abandoned warehouse purchased by one of the members in league, before being taken to the port to ship. Apparently, Puigdemont, who organized most of the heist, had been planning it since he took office in 2016. He used the day of the referendum, during which police were busy attempting to shut down polling stations, as a decoy to be able to finally make his move. The officials at the port, our informer claimed, were bribed to say silent.
A concerned citizen, Santiago García, told us, "I must say I am surprised such a large scale event like this was able to go unnoticed for so long. I think I speak for all of us when I say it makes us question what really is going on in politics and the government. He [Puigdemont] better not get away with deceiving us like this! I hope that foul man rots in jail."
Though Puigdemont has not yet given us his comment on the matter, a memorable quote by him in Brussels a few months ago makes us question what else he is secretly guilty of: “To be treated like a criminal, like a drug trafficker, a paedophile, like a serial killer, I think this is abuse … this isn’t politics, this is using the courts to do politics.” From his claim of being as a drug trafficker, among other things, makes us wonder if perhaps, just perhaps, there was a reason he was treated like that, and if any other scandals will surface about him soon.
