Lake Forest Park - It happens about once every 30 years. When sockeye numbers are high early and coincide with the northern humback migration, something special happens.

"We haven't seen this since 1992, when Jerry came [up] the locks," quipped Cutty Briar, Washington Department of Fish and Game, about the last humpback to make it through to Lake Washington. That whale was named after comedian Jerry Seinfeld, very popular at the time. "He left of his own accord, and so will this big girl."

This time, however, it is even more special, as this humpback is a white whale. One lucky boater got a good shot of the enormous marine mammal, a likely female based on the dorsal houston fin.

"Herman Melville would be proud," mused Lake Forest Park resident Johnny Queequeg, who's been out with his spotting scope since the whale first appeared Sunday morning. "She was hanging out off the pier near Log Boom Park, but headed back south at around 1500 hours."

Briar thinks the whale is getting her fill of salmon before heading north to feed in subarctic waters. "It's not a threat to boaters or humans. It'll swim back out in time. I'm just glad I got to see it in my lifetime. It's a rare event."
