Massey Ferguson is recalling almost 642,780 tractors under model numbers 265, 275, 285 and 1085 because of a problem with the steering assembly.

The recall affects all models with this designation built between 1977 and 1985. Most if not all were equipped with the potentially faulty parts at the factory, and others may have had them installed during repair work.

According to a report from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, both tie rod ball studs (a part that keeps the wheels firmly attached to the steering mechanism) is prone to fracturing. If they fail, the stability can be compromised and it can become difficult to steer, or lose complete control of the steering. The center stack (center pivot point) is also prone to wear, accelerated by the play in the tie rods.

Any time a vehicles steering control becomes compromised there is an increased risk of an accident.

According to the report from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA, a failure is most likely to happen during slow maneuvers.

Dealers are being advised of a fix and are required to replace most of the hardware for the steering mechanism, solely at Massey Fergusons expense. Owners are advised to contact their dealer for further information on this recall.

Further, a class action lawsuit has been filed on behalf of all current and previous owners to aid in restitution for previous costs incurred through no fault of their own.

Massey Ferguson was not available to comment, but previous reports allude to them not fighting this in court and wish to settle as quickly and efficiently as possible.
