An audit of state tax records shows that an error was made in carrying the zero on all state tax returns for residents of Williams County, but specifically the City of Williston. State tax commissioner Ben Eide states “it was a real windfall for us at the state level, we’ve been trying to find a way to fix budget shortages. Being able to have the wealthiest city in the state simply pay more taxes is a huge relief for the rest of the state”. The state has fixed the error and per state century code 58.12.136 (A) has the right to go back up to 7 years to recoup the back tax including penalties and fees. Early estimates indicate that the average household will owe roughly $25,000. This can vary depending on if you were born in North Dakota or another state and if you worked in 1 of the 3 key industries for the state: oil production, drug dealing, or prostitution. Eide also stated “let those bastards in Williston pay, they make more than I do anyway!”
