Auckland - Rolly Burrell and Angie Broadstock were on their way to a job at Auckland, West Harbour on Monday when they saw a Red Belly snake crawling around in a compartment on the passenger side of their car.

"We didn't expect to see something like this in New Zealand; A country that claims to be completely snake-free, but things like this happen, I guess. It was just a big suprise for us." Explains Rolly. "I'm hopeful that it won't happen again."

Auckland Zoo has found this snake to be that of the subspecies found in Australian. Auckland Zoo advised local residents to keep an eye out for any snakes that might be found in Auckland, as they believe there might be more Red-Belly Black snakes roaming around.

"This isn't the biggest suprise to us as we have found a Yellow-Bellied Sea Snake on Orewa beach back in 2011. However this case it wasn't a sea snake. We advise Auckland residents, especially West Harbour residents, to keep an eye out for this poisonous snake. It's dangerous, contact Auckland Zoo if you happen to find this snake anywhere in New Zealand." Says Lauren Booth, Carnivores Team Leader for Auckland Zoo.
