The Carnival Cruise Ship Miracle ran aground on Saturday morning in the hours of 02:00 according to US Naval and US Coast Guard officials. The vessel was on routine voyage to Cancun Mexico with 2124 passengers aboard when it strayed off course and struck a sandbar. Initial information indicates the vessel began taking on water in the crews quarters due to a breach in the hull. All passengers were forced to evacuate the vessel and are currently awaiting transportation to US ports.
US Coast Guard Chief Petty Officer David Markam stated initial review of the incident indicates a failure of the vessels "Iron Mike" system may have lead to the grounding. The "Iron Mike" system is a ships onboard auto pilot navigation system. Currently Carnival Representatives have not replied to requests for comment on the incident but have stated the ship has been taken out of the fleet and all future cruises have been cancelled and passengers will be refunded or offered later cruises in place of scheduled vacations.
