The official separation is set to happen in 2021. Lawmakers in Springfield have agreed to split the two. Republicans and Democrats debated the pros and cons throughout the night and have agreed to pass the bill. Illinois HB-2019S332 is officially in the books. Discussions are continuing on if Chicago will have a new state name or just be recognized as Chicago. Lawmakers see that both sides will benefit from the split but counties outside of Cook will be most benefited by the divorce. Once the bill is approved by the federal government the separation will move forward very quickly. New lawmakers will be added and a new Governor for downstate Illinois will be elected while J.B. Pritzker will continue as Governor for Chicago.
