A 15 year old boy was taken into custody on the night of the 31st in the historic district of Quebec City. The boy was charged with two counts of 1st degree murder and five counts of attempted murder after allegedly attacking 7 people with a sword on Halloween dressed in a medieval outfit.

The only issue? The boy was wrongly identified. Quebec City police made a statement the next day saying “The boy fit the description received. He was of big stature, standing at around 6’3”, with brown hair and a chainmail medieval outfit.”

After receiving a call at 10:30pm police began a two and a half hour manhunt throughout the city, finding victims in at least 4 locations. At around 1:30am police had apprehended the boy whose name has been kept secret. They then brought him to a hospital for psychiatric evaluation.

This is when police realized the boy was in fact not the perpetrator. By comparing the stab wounds on the victims to the sword the boy was carrying the police’s sword specialist determined that this sword was in fact not used to injure and kill the victims. This explained why the boy had no recollection of the events which the police claimed happened.

The 15 year old boy was bright back to the police station where his mother arrived in tears. The misidentified perpetrator was released however without compensation for the misunderstanding. His family is now filing a lawsuit against the city’s police for the incident.

Police then engaged in another search throughout the city however without prevail. The city has since issued a warning to the general public to stay vigilant, look out for the man and report anything suspicious, however this has also caused backfire as the Quebec City police has since received over 25 calls regarding people in medieval costumes, which happened to all be children.

Police say they “do not fear for the lives of the 5 injured as the injuries they sustained were minimal”. François Legault, Quebec’s Premier wrote on twitter Sunday "As tragic as these events are, don't lose sight of the fact that this is not representative of a community that is characterized by its warmth,". Although the event was distressing, Legault hopes and is confident that the people of Quebec will recover from the attack and that the police will apprehend the man behind the events. He also states that the Quebec City police will do their best to consolidate with the family of the boy who was taken into custody as it was a very unfortunate mistake and caused the boy unnecessary stress.
