Krispy Kreme's new Belleville location is a hit!

Belleville,IN -- As Edith Schlongus waited in the drive-thru line at the newly opened Krispy Kreme in Belleville on Tuesday, she rolled down her window to let the delicate aroma of hot glazed doughnuts waft through her car.

“My son begged me to come out for this; he’ll be so happy when he gets home from school,” the Monrovia resident said, detailing her family’s obsession with the gooey confections. “We love Krispy Kreme so much we usually drive to Indianapolis to get them. It’s so nice that it’s now right here in Hendricks county.”

Schlongus, who was the 26th car on line at 8:30 a.m., followed by at least 20 more, was just one of the many Monrovia residents who turned out for the beloved doughnut chain’s much-anticipated grand opening.

“I told my boss I’m gonna be late and he said it was fine -- as long as I bring him a dozen,” laughed Rusty Trombone of Amo. “Krispy Kreme is opening. I think that’s a pretty good excuse.”

The shop, which officially opened for business at 6 a.m., was fully staffed and ready for the rush, serving an estimated 400 customers before 9 a.m. and pumping out about 50 dozen doughnuts each hour.

Company execs said they were prepared to make at least 2,000 dozen before day’s end and the launch was handled seamlessly: A private security firm was on hand to direct a steady flow of drive-thru traffic, and two PFD cruisers were stationed in the parking lot to manage the crowd -- which during the morning rush was about 40 deep, slowly and politely snaking into the store.

“After a little over a year of work, we’re very happy to bring the joy of a hot Krispy Kreme doughnut to the residents of Belleville,” noted Charlie Blumpkin, director of operations for the Indiana division of Krispy Kreme, who was on hand to help open the site. “We saw this area as a huge destination point between Terre Haute and Indianapolis, and it fit in perfectly with the other stores in our Hoosier portfolio. We’re very excited to be here.”

The freestanding doughnut shop, which has been rising at 100 E Country Rd S., directly outside of the old cemetery, for a little over a year, contains the brand’s legendary glazer -- which can be witnessed in action through a large glass panel -- and also features “Hot Light” technology, a tremendous buzzing red beacon that lets customers know when the doughnuts are hot, fresh and ready to go. The expansive drive-thru -- already well-organized -- is Indiana’s first.
