This article is written to settle an ongoing debate for dancers. This age-old controversy discusses whether dance is a sport or an art. Many dancers claim that dance is a sport as opposed to an art form or a “hobby”. On one hand, you get the people who simply see it as a performing art, they don’t even begin to consider the athleticism it requires for not only the individual, but for the team. Dance not only requires strength, technique and flexibility, but it also requires a competitive nature and teamwork. All of which are elements for every sport. The dictionary defines a sport as “an activity involving physical exertion and skill in which an individual or team competes against another or others for entertainment” (Oxford Languages). Dance follows all of these elements, especially competitive dance. Not only does dance require all the elements that all sports do, but some could argue it requires more stamina than sports that are actually considered sports. While it’s true that all athletes need an incredible amount of stamina and athleticism, dancing requires the same skills, but they’re forced to make it look effortless. So while soccer players are running around clearly showing that they’re exhausted, dancers have to continue with a smile on their face, making each move appear effortless while hiding the fact that they’re worn out and exhausted from the audience. Dancers are at the studio almost daily, some totaling up to 30 hours per week. Dance training is intense, it requires both mental and physical strength to successfully perform routines, The amount of dedication and physical challenges dancers have, surely deems them worthy of the title “athletes”. Just like other sports, dancers are required to work together to execute a routine. If one person is out of sync, or displays poor technique, the entire group can look out of place or lose points in a competition. Each dancer needs to work on themselves to stay technically strong, as well as work in a team to keep the group looking its best. It becomes quite clear that dance fits all the requirements that typically classify an activity as a sport. It’s incredibly physical, and heavily relies on a team’s ability to work together. All things considered, dance should be considered a sport, no question.
