Peoria woman arrested was arrested and charged with prostitution

Peoria, IL police arrested Kayla Smith after determining that she was using a room in a motel for prostitution and was recently infected with HIV virus.

Kayla Smith, 26, was taken into custody Tuesday after police went to her room and found evidence of prostitution.

According to police:
Officer Peter J. Purcell saw a car backing into a motel parking lot about 11 a.m. with a young girl in the backseat. He checked the vehicle registration on a PennDOT database and learned it was not registered to Smith, who had recent contact with Bern Township police.
Hotel staff directed Purcell and Officer Matthew Henne to Smith's room. Purcell knocked on the door and a Smith answered and told him to wait. About two minutes later she came out to the hallway and closed the door behind her. She said no one else was in the room.
The officers saw money hanging out of her skirt and asked if she was involved in prostitution. She apologized for her behavior and started to walk away, then told the man she wanted him to leave because she didn't want any trouble.
Officers knocked on the door again, and a man walked out of the room. Parcell asked the man if he had negotiated sex for money with Smith. He said they had not yet. He said he had contacted Smith via a website but couldn't name the site.
Police searched the room and found a plastic bag containing two hypodermic needles and 20 packets of heroin. They also found a small amount of marijuana and other items, and $2,357.
The man hasn't been charged, but the investigation is continuing, Lt. Thomas Endy said.
Unlike most prostitution arrests that involve a male officer working undercover, Endy said, this arrest was the result of good old-fashioned patrol work by an attentive officer.
