Penn Medicine recently announced they will be laying off 58,000 staff, in what employee unions are calling a bloodbath. Penn says foreign staff will be brought in to replace these workers, in a strategic realignment. Penn is specificly targeting administration and middle managment, which Vice President of Finance Steven DeAngelo called an "aging workforce that is an anchor around our necks". Those slated for layoffs should be notified by Friday, December 22 Mr. DeAngelo said. Penn plans on introducing a new insurance self service system, which allows patients to preform there own billing with the help of their insurance.
